Fully four of five of our species
subscribe to a belief
in the existence of some prime mover
who controls our joy, or grief.
The Buddhists are not so constricted,
as enlightenment is only attained
by right thought, good works,
meditation and exercise of the brain.
New Agers trace a different route,
with a non-anthropomorphic Power,
that pervades all, from stellar flares,
to each rock, tree, and flower.
In each dogmatic system
with guidance inner, or from above,
exists a central concept
of goodness, peace, and love.
Yet as we look around us,
millions starve, or die in war,
as resources are depleted
and the monied fight for more.
Do those four of every five
pause from prayer or contemplation,
from threats of war over who is right,
or who is headed for damnation?
Do they ever stop mid-way
through praise and deific adulation,
and see the carnage we have wrought
with our varied views of creation?
Is it not time to set aside
gods that failed us every way,
and shoulder responsibility as our own,
working for a moral, and better, day?
Let us stand as adults of our species,
on this green cosmic speck of dust,
and work towards a tomorrow
of inclusion, love, and trust.
